Imagine you get your report card with an F in math. Obviously, you know your parents will get mad and try to find a way to get you to bring up that F to an A. What do you do? Will you lie and hide the report card or will you say the truth and show it to them? I firmly believe that lying is acceptable in our society.
Lying is justified when it can be used to protect and care for others. For example, Anne Frank survived longer because the people who gave her and her family shelter lied to the Nazis. Lying is sometimes needed to help save someone’s life. White lies lies are acceptable and sometimes even necessary. In addition, if your wife asks you if she looks fat with that shirt, you say she looks fabulous because anything else would be cruel. Lying can help to not hurt someone’s feelings. Lying is sometimes used for bad but mostly used to help someone. My point is that lying isn’t something we can control when it comes to someone’s feelings.

For example, for Harold Smith, lying to his daughter about his kidney tumor was worth the risk. “I tried to protect her. It slowed down the anxiety,” says Smith, 64, of Pioneer, CA. Lying prevents people from suffering that isn’t worth it mostly if it’s fixed in the end. “Lying to protect others can be a matter of life and death.” In addition, mothers have to lie to their children when it comes to getting them away from watching too much TV. Take for example, a mother from Quincy, Illinois lied to her son about there being no more cartoons on. Little white lies aren’t always bad to say, mostly if they are used to protect someone. Although we don’t like the idea of lying, it is sometimes necessary in order to be safe or healthy. If lying creates more positive than negative, it is okay to do

I often tell white lies because I am trying to protect myself or someone else. Most people tell white lies to people they care about but I tell them to those I do not. If I care about someone, I will tell them their breath stinks or their hair is “not okay” so they can look their best and not be embarrassed. To others, I will easily say “those colors go well together” or “You smell nice.” When I tell white lies, they are reserved for those who do not know me because those I am close to know I will be candid.…

As evidence, in the article, “The U.S. Political Campaign”, by Paul Gray states that “Anne Frank survived as long as she did because those sheltering her and he family lied to the nazis.” This connects to my argument because this shows that sometimes you have to lie in order to protect someone from a life or death situation. What I mean by this is lying is tolerable when it comes down to a dangerous situation. Additionally, in the article, “It's the Truth”, by NBC News, Cohen states that “An obvious example is when you’re lying to protect someone from serious harm.” To put this in another way, you need to lie to keep someone away from serious harm.…

    1. According to Ericsson, we all lie because we want to avoid confrontation, spare people’s feelings, and to get out of particular situations. To avoid confrontations, sometimes it is necessary to lie, for example, if you were talking about someone behind their back and they hear about it, you are going to deny that you ever talked bad about that person to avoid getting into an alteration. If someone is wearing an ugly outfit that they are real proud of, you are most likely going to lie to them by telling that someone that you love their outfit just to avoid hurting their feelings.…

In “The Ways We Lie” by Stephanie Ericsson she discusses and breaks down the activity of lying into different kinds of lies. Ericsson goes into great detail of about 10 of them, but there are many more. Some lies are for your peace of mind and maybe still bad for both parties, and some are for the better of someone else’s feelings. Ericsson believes that even if you feel you are perfect, nobody is and still tell lies no matter big or small, we do it and at times are unaware that it is considered a lie. Individuals nowadays get to a point where they are lying and don’t know whether to believe themselves or others.…

Should we lie because most Americans think it's always okay to lie all the time others think it's never okay to lie. Americans are very conflicted on whether we should or shouldn’t lie. I my opinion lying is only acceptable under certain circumstances, such as sparing others feelings. Some may feel that lying is never acceptable because it is morally wrong, however, I believe lying is acceptable when it can be used to protect and care for others. Randy cohen gave an example when he said “ if your wife is going out and she asks if she looks bad you say no it would be rude not to, because if you are already out of the house she will feel self conscious.…

This holds true even in situations where dishonesty seems like the easy way out. Perhaps one of the least considered, and possibly most difficult, aspects of honesty is being honest with oneself. Everyone has moments where lying may seem like the easy way out.…

For example, if there is a person who does not like conflict, he or she may tell a lie to fix the problem (Ford 98-99). People will also lie to other people by leaving out less desirable information that might hurt the other person emotionally. Lisa Firestone wrote “Even lies told in the name of protecting others can leave you feeling pretty bad about yourself, because you don’t feel like an authentic, strong individual when you aren’t being honest” (Firestone). The most common reason that lies by omission are told is to prevent unpleasant situations from occurring, even if it causes one to feel guilty (Firestone). People who have a big heart or cannot stand the thought of hurting someone or embarrassing them typically will lie to the other person by leaving out the more displeasing details.…
