The Ethicality Of Lyin Lying

Imagine that your friend asks you to listen to a song that they created, but you hate it and he asks your opinion. Do you tell the truth and potentially hurt his feelings or do lie to protect his feelings. I firmly believe that lying is OK in our daily lives. Lying is justified when it can be used to protect and care for others. For example, someone asks how they look before they go meet a lot of people , so you tell them they look nice; anything else would be cruel (Randy Cohen,3). Lying to someone about them can make them feel good about themselves and keep them happy. It is better to tell a lie and make a person live in bliss than to tell the truth and make the person live in self-pity and sadness. In addition, when you're really sick and you need serious medical help, you tell your loved ones that it’s nothing serious so they won't have to worry(Harold Smith, father, 3). We lie tell huge lies sometimes because we just want to protect the ones we love even if it is just save their feelings. Lying is not evil, especially if it protects the ones we love. In conclusion, lying is acceptable even wanted when it is to help, care, and protect others. …show more content…

Lying does not only help others, but it can also help you. In addition, You tell a lie to friend so you don't have to go out, but you don’t tell the truth so you don’t potentially hurt your friendship(Velin,2). Lying can solve even complicated help you in just one or two sentences and no one gets hurt. Lying can help you solve problems that would have gotten worse if you told the truth. After reading the article "Is Lying for the Greater Good Ethical" By Thomas G. Plante, it is evident that sometimes lying can be for the greater good because it can prevent other people getting their feelings hurt and being hurt physically . First the author states that, "Sometimes lying could be the more appropriate ethnical response to a ethnical conflict." "For example, if a friend of yours were to ask you "How do I look in my new outfit." "One might be compelled to tweak the truth to not offend or hurt the feelings of someone who matters to you". This means that a tiny white lie like this really isn't going to matter in any way shape or form.…

Most people prefer the truth, but most people also do not like for people to ruin their day by telling them their honest opinion. A lie is only a lie if what they are telling you is false. Friedrich Nietzsche said in Morality as Anti-Nature “truth is confused with the effects of believing something to be true” (355). It can be argued that a lie is justified if the person telling the lie believes it to be the truth. Ericsson believes that lying is immoral, but everyone does it.…

Is it ok to lie in any situation, or is it just wrong to lie at all ? In four articles that I read, it states a couple of things, for example, they talk about lying and if it's bad, is lying sometimes good, and is lying good. I believe lying is only good sometimes and it should only be used in white lies. I think a good time to lie is when you protect someone. One scenario of this is the story of Ann Frank.this is a good example because they were protecting Ann and her family by saying that there was nothing upstairs.…

In the article by Christopher Robichaud, it mentions that “Kant maintained that our negative duty to not lie cannot be violated” (Robichaud 191). On the other hand, the nonconsequentialists believe that there are circumstances in which, “the duty not to deceive is trumped by other considerations” (Robichaud 191). For example, in this article it mentions that if Spider-Man was to tell Aunt May his secret he would cause tremendous pain. Enough pain that she can potentially die. In the view of a nonconsequentialists it would be argued that causing serious physical harm trumps deceiving.…

In “The Ways We Lie” by Stephanie Ericsson she discusses and breaks down the activity of lying into different kinds of lies. Ericsson goes into great detail of about 10 of them, but there are many more. Some lies are for your peace of mind and maybe still bad for both parties, and some are for the better of someone else’s feelings. Ericsson believes that even if you feel you are perfect, nobody is and still tell lies no matter big or small, we do it and at times are unaware that it is considered a lie. Individuals nowadays get to a point where they are lying and don’t know whether to believe themselves or others.…

Lying is never ethically okay, yet it is done on a daily basis and is therefore more widely accepted by various people. Generally, lying should be avoided, but there are many situations where it is justified. Instinctive lies, or lies that you automatically tell on the spot are usually ok because it is part of human nature to instinctively lie to protect ourselves. However, planned lies, like stories that you make up on the go or false ideas that you think of before expressing them should never be allowed. For example, if someone were to ask you if you ate the last piece of cake, depending on their tone of voice, for many, their first instinct would be to say, “No!,” without even thinking.…
