They will not always eat the meat for themselves, but they give the food to other people or donate it to food banks. In 2010, there were eleven million meals given to the less fortunate by donations from hunters (source 20). There are some advantages to harvesting an animal. It is not often dangerous to eat deer, it is healthier, it can be more humane, and it can be cheaper (source 21).
It is not often that someone gets sick from eating meat they harvested. Unlike the animals that are raised to be eaten, like ones in slaughterhouses, deer have a less likely chance of getting diseases. In slaughter houses the animals are crowded together. If one of the animals is infected with a disease or virus then it is likely that others will get it, contaminating more of the meat that people eat. Deer have been known to have a disease called Chronic Wasting Disease, but in experiments there is no evidence that it has been transmitted to people (source
