Introduction
According to the information provided in the Tideekleen’s (TK) case, as a CSR consultant of Halo, I advice TK to follow Option C. Because Option C is the most ethical and socially responsible course of action. It not only considers the stake of the current stakeholders such as: employees, shareholders, government and retirees, but also help reduce the risk of cancer the workers who have been diagnosed with cancer that is associated with exposure to the toxic (case fact). The morally good act is based on Maxim and categorical Imperative (Definition). To universalize a maxim leads to it being made into a universal law without contradiction, or to one of two contradictions: contradiction in concept and contradiction in will. Under Kant’s theory, TK has an obligation to follow the maxim not to break promises. The company has strong reputation for social and environmental responsibility and has been regarded as a leader in corporate citizenship. By following option A, TK would not be socially responsible, as they do not pay the benefits, pensions and other compensations that they promise and the employees deserve. In option B, they would be harming the environment in Liberia. Therefore, TK is not environmentally responsible. They would also be harming the people in Liberia by increasing the risk of cancer due to labour-intensive, low-tech methods used in their facility. According to Kant’s, Liberians have a right not to be harmed and infected by the toxic exposure, as well as TK has the perfect duty not to harm them.
