A terminal illness is a disease that cannot be cured. It is expected to result is the death of a patient within a small period of time. The term “terminal illness” is used when seeing more serious problems in a patient, such as cancer or advanced heart disease. With all the facts and evidence it is pretty safe to say, terminal illness is usually the last stop before death. In 1991, a Dutch report said that in 86% of their Euthanasia cases, it didn’t shorten the patient’s life by more than a maximum of a week or as little as a few days (10 Arguments for Legalizing Euthanasia). For some people who don’t chose Euthanasia and have a terminal illness have only one other choice and that is to suffer for the rest of their life with the worst pain they’ve ever had. A man named Tony Nicklinson was rejected his right to die once in 2010 and again in 2012 by the British High Court. He suffered “locked in” syndrome which left Tony incapable of moving a single muscle in his body. He described this condition by calling it “a living nightmare”. He could not do anything by himself or even ask someone to do it for him. He did the only thing he thought to do, starve himself to death. Health Care funding, nursing staff and shortness of beds are all big factors for ensuring patients of the hospital and maintaining a hospital. Most people are shocked to think costs of medical procedures was a factor in their life-or-death decisions. Although, unfortunately there is no way to get around the absurd expenses for end of life care in America. When patients come to a conclusion that they will not get better, the treatment doesn’t stop. For example, if you have cancer and you choose to fight it, you’ll fight it until you’ve tried all treatments and you’re still cancerous. At this point, you’ll want the treatment to stop, but your doctors will encourage you to keep fighting. While your cancer is staying the same your medical bill is raising out of the roof. Mercy killing is an only hope to get out of these outrageous medical bills. Also, when the death comes, the family will not have to use every last penny of their life savings to pay it off. Most patients who suffer with terminal illness want to die for one of the two reasons: they feel as though they are a financial and physical burden on their family or the pain and suffering is enough to make them want to die. In Oregon 66% of their Euthanasia patient’s admitted that they chose the path because they felt as though they were a burden on their family.
