Professions are guided by codes of ethics to aid them in performance of their duties and to ensure maintenance of high standards of conduct. Police officers are faced with a maze of obligations in the performance of their official duties. The “Law Enforcement Code of Ethics” and “Canons of Police Ethics” were created to make explicit the conduct considered appropriate for police officers and to guide them in the performance of their duties. Although police have these guides, many are faced with ethical dilemmas, also known as a moral dilemmas. In addition to the fact that most departments do not conduct ethics training, nothing is more devastating to individual departments and our entire profession than uncovered scandals or discovered acts of officer misconduct and unethical behavior. Can they be taught integrity? I believe police with ethical problems can be taught if clear goal and incentive are in place. It has been proven the fear of consequences is not enough to motivate appropriate behavior. The training for police officers should be modified. It should go beyond the basic principal of ethics and integrity and implement real world situations that demonstrate the conflicts and temptations faced daily.
The general public has a vital interest in police accountability. Law enforcement agencies are one of the principal agencies of social control in modern society with a general mandate to control crime, maintain order, and provide miscellaneous services to the public.
A police officer’s character and conduct while off duty must always be exemplary, thus maintaining a position of respect in the community in which he or she lives and serves. The officer’s personal behavior must be beyond reproach. The community requires that the officer portray a life that is decent and honorable. Police officers must remember the public is watching at all times. The public will exam their decisions from a causal drink to an innocent
