Annie is having an ethical dilemma. On one hand, she thinks that a testimonial by Lance, who is vegetarian, might be dishonest. He will sell and give his approval or endorsement on a product (Bud’s Best bacon) that he does not use any more. On the other hand, she does not want to ruin this opportunity and maybe it wont be that bad because Lance used to consume this brand of bacon before. So, Annie may have the ethical intention to behave in a moral and ethical way but there are some obstacles like her job, her boss, and this opportunity that might change her mind. According to the law “the Advertising Principles of American Business state that advertising containing testimonials shall be limited to those of competent witnesses who are reflecting a real and honest opinion or experience.” So, Lance opinion is not truly honest because by the time of the commercial he is a vegetarian and he does not consume any bacon at all. So, I think that the commercial can challenge as deceptive.
Is the action for the greatest good of the greatest number of people affected by it?
This action is just going to benefit the agency and maybe Lance because they are going to be pay for this job. However, this action is not going to be the greatest good for the greatest number of people because many people are going to believe what Lance is endorsing. Lance became vegetarian because he had cholesterol problems so by giving his approval to this brand many people might suffer of cholesterol too.
