The ethical dilemma that I have decided on for this assignment is a choice that I have to do a couple times a week minimum. This choice always tear’s at me when having to make which way I will lean towards. The decision or “dilemma” that I face is having to up-sale extra work or not too. I know this might not sound like an ethical dilemma, but for dealership technicians it is. I am always under pressure from upper management to get more up-sales on every vehicle that comes in for service. Now how is this exactly an ethical dilemma? When I sit back and think about this dilemma using the consequentialist theory, I feel I’m doing the right thing. As the utilitarianism theory states that you should maximize the benefits to society while minimizing the harms. The stakeholders of this situation are society, the company I work for, and myself. I guess you could consider the industry as a whole as a stakeholder. I have been in the industry for 13 years now and have never sold anything to anyone that they truly don’t need. I believe that by doing this I’m maximizing the gain for society, while it may be hurting myself, the company and the industry. When I made a consequentialist analysis chart the benefits for myself and the company would cause more harm to the overall effect on society. It is expensive to have a vehicle repaired already but if your costing people even more money on unneeded items, it will affect other businesses where they could spend that money. I think the best possible solution to this dilemma would be to pay the technicians to perform the inspection. This would make them be more ethical since they are making money not relying on up-sales. I this the reason that some people can make decisions that are morally wrong? Is something wrong with that part of their brain? Or do they just ignore the thoughts? I recently started trying to become consciously aware of the way I’m thinking when making an ethical judgment. Locus of Control: This is a fascinating topic to dive into because everyone is different. They are obviously groups of people that share the same common characteristics, but no one thinks identically. Someone’s locus of control is their perception of how much control they exert over life’s events. With my dilemma and my locus of control over the decision would be considered internal.
