Alice Walker, the American novelist, said, “The decisions you make are a choice of values that reflect your life in every way.” ¬¬In her quote, Walker discusses how people constantly make choices, and these choices are related to how they live. Sometimes people make small choices, but throughout history, there have been times when individuals had to make tough choices. For example, when the Supreme Court had to decide in Marbury v. Madison, and Plessy v. Ferguson. While the justices had to make a severe choice, none of these cases or choices were as ethical and complicated as the 2015 same-sex marriage court case. She was an independent woman who fought for woman’s rights, and if she lived in our time, she would also fight for this. The Declaration of Independence states that we have the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Some people will find happiness in being able to marry a man or a woman. Another reason we should legalize same-sex marriage is because it can make talking about being gay an open topic of conversation with our children; it can teach them that love is love. As the Huffington Post states, “Our children need to grow up differently than we did. They need to hear that “normal” word from us.” John Stuart Mill would agree that same-sex marriage should be legalized because he believes that happiness is an important component in our lives. However, he would say that legalizing it wouldn’t help us find higher pleasures, because gay marriage would be a lower pleasure.
