The Essence of Joy Recently Penn State choir, Essence of Joy, performed their first concert of the year. The concert was live streamed, which provided others, myself included, who were unable to attend to experience the concert. This was a concert that included works of various composers and songs that all complemented each other well. With its gospel-esc sounds, the choir brought soul and rhythm to each piece of music they performed. The concert featured various composers and the majority of the music that was performed was spiritual music. There were two featured composers— Glenn Burleigh and Moses Hogan— along with a few other composers— Sydney Guillaume, Larry Fallow, Kurt Carr, Anthony Brown, Raymond Wise, V. Michael McKay, Anthony Leach, Lonnie Lynn(a.k.a. Common), Che Smith, and John Stephens(a.k.a. John Legend). The men and women that made up the Essence of Joy choir possessed great overall sound quality. Each voice complements the other and blended well together. There was a mix of vocal parts— tenor, bass, alto, and soprano— that provided a rich and diverse timbre and texture. In addition to a well blended sound, the choir also showcases strong dynamics. It was possible to hear the various dynamics, like crescendos and decrescendos. The choreography that the choir performed was engaging and suited the songs that some choreography. Also, the majority of songs and their arrangements that were performed had an up-beat and hopeful tone quality. Iconic vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson [1941-2016] was honored in a musical celebration colored by great performances of dearest fellows from different generations. In addition to an incredible instrumentalist, Hutcherson was a master composer who left an indelible mark over the course of a rich five-decade career. Classic records like Dialogue, Components, Oblique, and Cirrus will be forever in my heart. At the time we arrived at the packed St. Peter’s Church, vibraphonist Joe Locke was reading something he had written for Hutcherson, an extremely impactful influence on him.…

This past Friday, I had the opportunity to see Dr. Rachel Whitcomb's performance in PNC Recital Hall, titled "Back on my Feet Again. " This was a country, blues, and bluegrass concert coming from a vocalist and professor with a classical learning background. It centered around a theme that although a knowledge of classical techniques is important for any singer, they should still try to incorporate their own unique musical techniques into their teaching or performance repertoire. The beginning of the concert featured a digital presentation that questioned what "appropriate" music should be considered and who has the authority to decide what should be performed by formal singers. The questions were all rhetorical and would later be answered by Dr. Whitcomb throughout her performance.…

Sound is the result of vibrations in the air set by the motion of an instrument or a body movement. In this case of the concert, the sound in the Mariachi Fuego piece had its distinctive sounds with the high pitch of the performer in the background of one piece and lowness of the singer in the first piece. Specifically, the singer sung in a medium to low pitch and was accompanied by different instruments who also sung to accompany him in harmony at specific times. The second piece, Cordoba, had a romantic mood to it and had a change in dynamic levels throughout the piece. In the beginning of the piece, it was calm and the tempo was slow.…

It sampled music from all over the continent of Africa. The reoccurring theme that pretty soon stood out to me was how common the pattern of alternating between a solo vocalist and a group of singers was. Over half of the songs on the CD used this type of vocal interaction. Out of the songs that had this back and forth between a soloist and a group, it was also common for the group to alternate between singing together in social unison with high vocal blend and to interlock their voices, singing different parts of the tune. Having the singers split between these two styles so frequently makes me think that this is a song style that is more common in the African folk tradition.…

Standing on stage at The Kennedy Center singing to an audience of veterans, I realized my future accounting degree could combine my career with a valuable cause. After previously taking a high school finance course, I wanted to major in accounting. However, it was not until I participated in the 2015 National Memorial Day Choral Festival that I knew how to use it to serve those who have already served. When my choir director revealed the 2015 trip destination, I was overjoyed in anticipation of experiencing the nation’s capital for the first time in my life. As my choir started learning the festival music, I was awestruck by the dark lyrics of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ cantata “Dona Nobis Pacem” and inspired by others such as Mark Wilberg’s “Let Peace Then Still the Strife”.…

I have just finished performing a piece with the chorus minutes earlier, when a member of the chorus steps forward and addresses the audience to explain and introduce the next piece.…
