The Essay Paul Graham Analysis

Improved Essays
After reading Paul Graham’s essay entitled “The Age of the Essay”, Michael Dickens brings up the a great point of spending one month per semester on writing essays. I too believe this is a great way for students to develop unique writing skills or even strive to improve on their writing. I’ve notice in class we don’t take much time to learn how to write a proper essay. We just read articles, literature and write it into a traditional hamburger format essay being intro, three body paragraphs and a conclusion. This does not allow me to improve on my writing nor challenges me to improve my writing in any way.

The education system does not allow us students to fully express ourselves in our writing. Each year we are expected to do the same thing

Overall the essays that we have read this semester have been good. There are a few essays in particular that I think benefited me the most was “The Time to Act I Now” written by Al Gore, “Just Walk on By” written by Brent Staples, and the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” written by Martin Luther King. These essays have benefited me in a numerous amount of ways in which I am going to explain how their writing styles helped me become a better writer. Staples helped me a lot in which he taught me to explain my reasoning fully so that the audience know exactly what I am talking about. Another thing that Staples taught me was to explain the setting of the story in full detail so the readers can visualize what’s actually happening in the story this…

Could you imagine a professor telling you that you'd never have to write an essay again? Some students would love the idea but there's a catch. Essays would be replaced with oral exams. In the article The end of the college essay by Rebecca Shuman, She argues that essays are a waste of time. She believes that most students cheat them, plagiarize, manipulate computer fonts to meet page requirements, and in most cases the students can't handle the instructor's feedback.…

Amongst students, reading and writing are often considered more daunting tasks compared to speaking and listening. Although some have made the argument that writing in an educational setting is easier because it allows students to share their understanding in a private way the process of writing is considered strictly academic to some. Those who were lacking in writing skills, me included, can relate to the frustration of constructing an introduction paragraph, thesis statement, and so on. A majority of the time I spent writing my high school essays were actually spent erasing and rewriting sentences on subjects that I understood, but could never explain in an articulate manner. For that reason, how writing is handled in the classroom has been a main concern of mine since the beginning of this course.…

When thinking about an essay, it seems like it is involved with every relevant topic in the world today. There are so many different types of essays that the real description of an essay has been lost. One of our greatest desires is to find out why essays matter as much as they do. It seems as if our careers are based on a five-paragraph paper that if we do not achieve it to perfection then we will succumb to the bottom of society.…

A study from the journal, “Automated free text marking with Paperless School” by Oliver Mason states that in Britain on average, a teacher spends 40% of their time teaching compared to 30% of their time grading papers. (Mason, 2002) If this study is accurate then these teachers only have 30% of their time left for making lesson plans along with living their personal lives. Many instructors have reported staying up all night or waking up very early to take the time to grade essays. If this is the outcome of assigning essays, it is very understandable as to why teachers seem to only assign a few essays per course, thus resulting in inadequate essay practice for the students.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
