It was in the years following, that The Production Code was liberalized, (1956) and the Pledge of decency was re-written, and in 1965 the Legion changed its name. It continued to damn explicitly erotic films, yet many Catholics still viewed them secretly. Films which offended the faith, such as Jesus Christ – Superstar (1973) and Last Temptation of Christ (1988) where Jesus married Mary Magdalene, were banned, as well. Ultimately, the film industry was one of the chief mechanisms by which the Catholics exited their own ghetto and assimilated into the larger American society.
