The United Nations has confirmed South Sudan a level-3 crisis (European commission, 2015). This is the highest level of humanitarian crisis. South Sudan currently ranks second in the European Commission 's Global Vulnerability and Crisis Assessment index (European commission, 2015). The United Nations Mission In South Sudan (UNMISS) has released a thorough report on the conflict surrounding South Sudan on the 8th of May 2014. This report revealed that both “gross violations of human rights and international law have occurred on a massive scale” and “civilians have often been targeted along ethnic lines” (International Coalition for the Responsibility to Protect, 2013). In more focus, the report discovered “reasonable grounds to believe that the crimes against humanity of murder, rape and other acts of sexual violence, enforced disappearance, and imprisonment have been committed by both sides of the conflict” (ICRP, 2013). This conflicts with each individual right to basic human rights. Human rights are the basic freedoms and standards considered by many societies as belonging automatically to all people to enable them to live their lives with dignity, the right to live, liberty and personal security (Buchanan et al.. 2012). Effective peace agreements, cessation of hostilities and flexible means to cope with seasonal changes will help long term. This however has been difficult due to charities and services run by United Nation being targeted (Moszynski, 2011). “Items looted include medical supplies, surgical equipment, non-food items and water and hygiene equipment. These supplies had been dispatched to Abyei town in recent weeks to respond to urgent needs of the town residents and the rural population of surrounding villages” (Moszynski, 2011). With the support of aid programs, such coping mechanisms would help in the recovery. These interventions will provide an initial start for more permanent solutions for those displaced due to the crisis such as enabling the displaced to return to their homes and rebuild their lives. South Sudan’s justice system must be strengthened. Addressing such conflicting issues including loss of housing, land and property and paramount. Providing health promotion will enable each individual to reach a state of physical, mental and social wellbeing needed to cope with the environment surrounding. WHO defines health promotion as the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to promote their health (Buchanan et al.. 2012).
