The renowned king of Uruk in Mesopotamia, Gilgamesh, comes from an age which had been wholly forgotten, until the last century archaeologists began uncovering the buried cities of the Middle East. Mesopotamia is one of the cradles of human civilization. The earliest cities in the world history appeared, about 3500 BC. “Mesopotamia” is a Greek word meaning, “Land between the Rivers”. The region is a vast, dry plain through which two great rivers, the Euphrates and Tigris flow. Gilgamesh was the king who built the city of Uruk. The city was surrounded by sky high walls which only protected its people . externally but failed to to protect the people from Gilgamesh himself. While the gods were creating Gilgamesh they gave him perfect body. Shamash the glorious sun blessed hi, with beauty, the god of the storm endowed him with courage. The great gods made his beauty perfect, surpassing all others, terrifying like a great bull. Two thirds they made him god and one third man. Gilgamesh was the man to whom everything was known. He could predict things. But he misused his authority. He troubled his people a lot. . His lust left no virgin to her lover, neither the warriors daughter nor the wife of the noble. Yet he was the shepherd of the city, wise, comely and resolute. The gods after looking at his behaviour cried to Aruru, the goddess of creation to creates Gilgamesh’s equal, who would fight him and both of them would leave Uruk in peace. He founded Persia by uniting the two original Iranian tribes- the Medes and the Persians. He was a great conqueror. He is best remembered for his unprecedented tolerance and magnanimous attitude towards those he defeated. Gilgamesh on the other hand was demigod who built the city of Uruk surrounded by sky high walls. Both the rulers gave equal importance to construction. But Gilgamesh on the other hand did not give much importance to expansion of his territories like Cyrus the Great. Gilgamesh was lazier and troubled his people and yet was accepted as the ruler. Cyrus was a proper human yet one of the powerful rulers the history has witnessed. Gilgamesh was a demigod, one third of human and two third of god. Cyrus the great respected his people and did not force a particular religion on them. His reign was marked by peace and prosperity. Gilgamesh’s reign was little different. Gilgamesh went on adventures with his friend and also by himself. Whereas there is no mention of such adventures in Cyrus’s reign apart from his enormous and magnificent victories. Cyrus was seen as a hero, people welcomed him as a liberator. He was not hated by his people. On the other hand Gilgamesh was seen differently.
