Ishtar wants to marry Gilgamesh, but he refuses because he knows what Ishtar has done to her last couple husbands. Ishtar becomes angry and decides to free the bull of the heavens to kill Gilgamesh. Enkidu and Gilgamesh give the heart of the bull to Shamash. That night Enkidu has a dream the gods are upset and are having a meeting. The next day the two men find out the gods are angry and feel someone should be punished. Enkidu becomes very ill and curses the hunter who found him. Shamash informs Enkidu that once he dies Gilgamesh will be filled with grief and sadness, and he will leave his city and wander the earth. Enkidu is happy with what he hears and takes back his curse. Before Enkidu passes away Gilgamesh promises him a big monument. Enkidu dies 12 days later. Gilgamesh keeps Enkidu until insects surround his body. He finds the best craftsman in the city to build Enkidu’s monument of fame. Gilgamesh rips all his belongings and set off into the wilderness to find Utnapishtim. Gilgamesh hopes he can find a way to escape death. He travels through tunnels and total darkness till he reaches a garden filled with goods. On his way Siduri warns him about the stormy sea and poisonous water but that doesn’t stop Gilgamesh. Siduri sends him over to Urshanabi, and Urshanabi helps guide Gilgamesh. The book was a good read. Each tablet had an ongoing situation or problem that made it a fun, and interesting read. The author wrote this to show the readers some key points some being; all humans are certain to die and time is limited. Just like when the snakes ate Gilgamesh’s plant he knew there was no other way for him to live forever, and he still returned to his city and was better than ever. There has been a lot of debate whether The Epic of Gilgamesh is fictional or factual. Ultimately it depends on what religion and culture you come from. There are clear records of the flood, but the story was sent down from generation to generation. People tend to exaggerate stories so we don’t know the whole truth. This book gave you a little bit of a feeling for what it was like to be alive in the ancient days. You learned about different gods and goddesses and what their purpose was. It was a fun read and I would definitely recommend this book. You leaned learned to be thankful for what you have, and what you do to others will always come back to
