The Epic of Gilgamesh expressed many ancient Babylonians’ concerns and expectations to their community’s leader. Gilgamesh is the monarch of the city of Ururk. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, Monarch means one that holds preeminent position or power. Gilgamesh is the person who makes the decisions to benefit the city of Uruk. In the book of The Epic of Gilgamesh, there’s many insight of the quality of a good king.
When the population grows rapidly, the competition for resources will become more intense. Gilgamesh’s role as a monarch is to protect and expand city of Uruk’s economic strength. The epic of Gilgamesh suggests the leader of the community should listen to its people. When Gilgamesh decides to fight with Humbaba, Enkidu and elders of the community all disagree to Gilgamesh’s blunt decision and advise Gilgamesh to not go to the Forest of Cedar. Enkidu says to the elders “Tell him not to go to the Forest of Cedar! --- If you penetrate his forest you are sized by the tremors”. 6 After the strong discouragement from the community elders, Gilgamesh still keeps his decision and defeats Humbaba with Enkidu. The death of Humbaba angers the gods and Enkidu losses him life. If Gilgamesh listened to the advises from his community, Enkidu wouldn’t losses his life. In the beginning of the book, Gilgamesh is not a good leader at all. Gilgamesh takes young boys and girls away from their parents. “Gilgamesh lets no son go free to his father. ---- but Gilgamesh lets no daughter go free to her mother”. 7 The angry community can’t stop Gilgamesh’s action, they can only prey to the god Aruru. Aruru creates Enkidu to stop Gilgamesh. From the friendship with Enkidu, Gilgamesh starts to become a good community
