Heroes. We see heroes every day, we know a hero when we see one, whether it’s a fire fighter or a soldier. But what exactly makes make a person a hero. Certain characteristics of a hero were shown in Geatish culture. The best example of this culture was displayed in Beowulf; a Geatish folktale. The story tells of a man, Beowulf, which sailed to a foreign land just to lend aid to its people, by defeating a horrifying monster that consistently threatened their lives and lively hood. The great warrior Beowulf showed that he possessed all the characteristics of a hero through selflessness, loyalty, courage, friendship, leadership, intelligence, bravery and great feats.
First, Beowulf shows off his prowess as a warrior through his heroic acts of bravery. Beowulf displayed his bravery multiple times throughout his quest, not fearing to be brave in any situation. One excellent example of his bravery is, “So Beowulf chose the mightiest men he could find, the bravest and best of the Geats, fourteen in all, and led them down to their boat” (119-122). This demonstrates his bravery because he was the top dog of the Geats. He possessed enough bravery to gather the mightiest warriors together and lead them into battle. By him being able to choose these men, showed how brave he really was, and therefore proving he was an epic hero.
