According to the CRHE, many homeschooled children maintain active social calendars and are involved in many activities outside the home. For those who homeschool, these activities are essential so the child gets the chance to develop socially. Researcher Dr. Brian D. Ray was commissioned by the Home School Legal Defense Associate (HSLDA) to conduct a nationwide study of homeschooling in America, and in his study he found that at least 13% of homeschoolers in the sample did not play with anyone outside of their family. Unfortunately, this data was in 1997, and there are a lot more homeschooled children now, which means the amount of isolated children has gone up as well ("Homeschooling & Socialization" 1). When children are socializing with others they are learning how to talk to others, how to work in teams and how to create relationships, and that is something that public schooling offers children. Many homeschoolers look at this as a positive thing. John Holt author of Teach Your Own says in his article Homeschooling and Unschooling Resources that people typically always understood that before you could teach something you had to know it yourself. He says that only recently did human beings get the notion that in order to teach others what you know, you have to spend years being taught how to teach. He is referring to the fact that you don’t need a teaching degree to be a teacher, and that being a parent is sufficient. Jane Liddle, a homeschooling parent interviewed in a CQ Researcher article Home School Debate states, “I 've learned that you can really shoot the moon with your child. I 'm right there with her in the learning process. I know what keeps her challenged and what sabotages her. You can customize. You figure out what works for your child.” I agree to an extent that customizing curriculum can be a benefit for children, but I also think curriculum is made for the children for a specific reason, and teachers have to go through their specific programs for a specific reason. According to Teach.org, to become a school teacher you must obtain a bachelor’s degree, complete a teacher preparation program and get state or national certification to teach. That being said, we know teachers in the public schools have the qualifications required in order to teach in school districts. What
