In his lecture, “Failed Metaphors and A New Environmentalism for the 21st Century, “ is about the failures associated with the ways scientist and researchers tried to promote conservation and then finds solutions and new ideas to help the environment. Peter Kareiva starts is lecture with describing the failures of metaphors. We have seen many pictures and videos of people cutting down trees, dead animals due to mostly human impact, and other things that make our eyes bulge out in utter …show more content…
These things are metaphors that basically tell us to promote conservation and help benefit the environment by our actions. Peter Kareiva says that these things are a waste of money because there is not benefit coming from them. These metaphors failed because the world is still not doing well and humans are not changing their actions. I agree with the points that Peter Kareiva makes because these metaphors (pictures, books, ads, campaigns, and more) do not really impact the person. For example, you give a person the picture (19:45) in the video showing a boat explosion and tell them about the environment damage that it is going to cause them or even show them picture of dead animals and tell them they need to support and promote the conservation of these species because they are detrimental to environment, most people at first will be shocked and dismayed at what is happening and agree to do environmental friendly actions. Then after a week or so most people just go on with their normal routine and rarely give thought about it. So, in reality all these ads and campaigns are not really benefiting anyone and any specie. He says this needs to stop because humans do not seem to be changing their ways. He offers ideas one being planetary gardening. This will help solve some of the problems associated with the environment and is also cost effective. We should
