PAS Enrichment Scholarship Reflection Essay This summer I had the opportunity to spend four weeks in Peru. I participated in the Summer International Health Fellowship with the Foundation for International Medical Relief for Children. Along with 16 other college students from across the study and a couple of medical students, I spent three weeks in a city in the mountains called Huancayo and one week in a city in the jungle called La Merced. We did many different health related and other cultural activities and had an incredible experience. I grew to love the country of Peru and its people and am so grateful for the time I was able to spend there. While we were in Huancayo, we did five health campaigns in small villages surrounding the city inhabited by farmers that lived higher up the mountains. We would go to the village square and do patients …show more content…
In Huancayo, we spent a whole day hiking up to a glacier at 15,000 feet and another day exploring a beautiful natural red rock formation called Torre Torre. In La Merced, we spent another day hiking to several different waterfalls in the jungle. We also got to try lots of new foods, especially fruits, which were all delicious and so fresh. One of my favorite parts was getting to know our host families. Six of us stayed with my family in Huancayo in a compound that included our main host, Carlos, his mother and two of his sisters and their families. I was the only one in my house group that spoke Spanish so I got a lot of practice translating and we spent many nights laughing through our language barrier. In La Merced, 12 of us stayed in one house with a lovely lady named Rosa and her family. We didn’t get to know them as well because we were only there for a week but it was great getting to know them a little bit

The house we stayed at in Haiti was also a home to a group of younger Haitians. Through the course of the week, we grew lasting friendships with them. The Haitians would ask for help with English words and grammar, while also helping to teach the team some Creole words. The team would play a game with them that was like a Haitian version of corn hole. The players would try and throw a rock into a cinderblock, and the last person to get their rock in the hole would have to drink a glass of water as fast as they could.…

I saw only darkness, save the faint glow of lava rocks in a small hole dug in front of me. I breathe in what should be steaming hot air, but it is dry, yet so hot. Even growing up in Tucson where the summer heat can reach 110 degrees, I’ve never experienced something quite like this. I wished I was playing out in that summer heat, this felt like I was being cooked in an oven. I breathe in again, more dry air.…

We got to see stalagmites, stalactites, flowstones, chandeliers and soda straws. We took lots and lots of pictures because if I didn't slow my family, I feel like they wouldn't have believed me. We spent about half our day there, and then after that she took me to the San Antonio Zoo. That zoo was humongous, way bigger than the one in the valley. I saw monkeys, elephants, rhinoceros, lions, zebras, and even penguins.…

This summer I was presented with the opportunity to go on a mission trip to the mountains of honduras. When I accepted this opportunity I was not aware of the effect it would have on my life and character. Honduras is a third world country with one of the highest murder rates in the world. The violence and poverty have a huge impact on Honduran society. Things that we take for granted, such as indoor plumbing, is a foreign luxury to the people of honduras.…

My journey began as soon as I stepped out of the airport. While getting to see how similar the houses were structurally but were all unique from their color, I learned how my Hispanic culture includes being humble about themselves, what they own, and their lives in general. Getting out into the streets and being able to see everyone's shops and restaurants was amazing. After that experience, I learned that my culture relies on the community to work together to support each other. I then met my relatives that I haven't even gotten to meet.…

It was an early Monday morning, I was pretty happy at the time because this trip was going to get me out of a full week of school. So, it all began at the airport, looking out of the window I could see our plane, It was a bit intimidating and I was really nervous because this was going to be my first time on a plane. Usually every two to three months we would go and stay for a couple of days. I usually stayed at my maternal grandma because my cool uncle was there and he had a Playstation 2 which was awesome. Anyway she also helped me learn Spanish which was also another big reason I stuck with her. One summer she enrolled me in a summer school in Mexico so I could learn to speak Spanish better. After all, everyone there spoke it 24/7 and it wasn’t like I had a choice to speak English.…
