The Enemy Charlie Higson Essay

I read the book The Enemy by Charlie Higson. In my opinion, the topic of this book is conflict. On their journey, the characters all face countless examples of conflicts and work to resolve them, such as, safety, sickness, and the kids fighting amongst themselves. This book contains many examples of both internal and external conflict.
One of the examples of conflict is the safety of the army of kids marching towards Buckingham Palace. The group consists of 53 kids but the main characters the story follows are, Arran, Achilleus, Freak, Maxie, Blue, Callum, Jester, and Ollie. These kids have to travel through downtown London in the midst of a war between kids and zombies. These zombies are a product of an unknown disease turning anyone over

When the army finally arrives at Buckingham Palace, David the leader of the group at the Palace greets them. David claims to have vast amounts of food and can offer shelter, however, David lies to them about the food, as it seems that they are barely getting by on what they have. David wants to restore London to it’s former glory by restoring the royal family and uniting all the kids of London. This turns out to be a lie when David tricks the army into killing a camp full of squatters by saying they are infected so that he can take the land and expand his growing empire. Also, he tricks the army to bring him a group of kids that live in the Natural History Museum to exchange their allegiance for one of their group’s leaders that he has captured for betraying him at the beginning of the disaster. This is an example of both internal and external conflict.
So lastly, there are many points of conflict in The Enemy. Safety, sickness, and the kids fighting among themselves are three of the biggest conflicts the characters in this book go through. Finally, these are all conflicts since they are all obstacles on their way to restore London.
The Enemy by Charlie Higson was a great book in my opinion. With its successor Dead, The Enemy delivered a great plot and a great way to start the series. The Enemy delivered great detail and a vivid description of a post apocalyptic London. This book told

Although John Knowles’s novel, A Separate Peace, is set in the midst of WWII, there is a lack of the typical violence and combat associated with the war. However, Knowles uses wartime themes to depict the personal battles the protagonist is forced to face. The most prevalent of the wartimes themes present in the main characters of the novel are feelings of hostility and enmity. This demonstrates that the war, although not physically occurring with the United States, is still taking a toll on Americans. The conflict between the protagonist, Gene, and his friend, Phineas, consists of the battle each boy at the school must come to face as he grows up in a world engulfed in the war.…

Munro presents the “character vs. self” conflict as the most significant. This is because it affected the inciting incident, rising action of the story, and climax. The first reason of why the “character vs. self” conflict was the most important, is because it created the inciting incident.…
