Who was the leader in the family? While each of the characters played a significant role in the movie’s main objective, I would have to say the grandfather was the true leader. Throughout the movie he was the one encouraging Olive whether that was practicing her routine, telling her she was beautiful, or ensuring she was having fun. He was the first to say, he’d go to California with Olive for the pageant. But he didn’t just check on Olive, he managed to keep the rests of the family’s morale up. When Richard got bad news about his book, the grandfather was the first to say encouraging words. Did these roles ever change?
While each character went on the trip not everyone was there in 100 percent support. Some characters had bad attitudes or negative commentary. Moreover, some followed the group, but did not act as a team. In my opinion, there were two main followers that changed the most.
1. Dwayne. Dwayne started out being the kid who hated everything and everyone. He didn’t want to be a part of the family team to go to the Little Miss Sunshine pageant, he didn’t want to engage with the family, and he didn’t want to support. However, Dwayne turned out to be the most caring family member throughout the entire trip to California. Dwayne may not have said anything, but his facial were extremely expressive allowing viewers to see as the movie progresses he begins to care more and more about getting Olive to the Little Miss Sunshine pageant. Then Dwayne has the biggest character transformation of the entire family. After his color blindness realization and grief period, Dwayne becomes a team player. At the end of the movie, he is seen cheering Olive on and dancing on the stage. He puts aside his own emotions as well as his previous negative mindset to be an active and support family team

It was clear Sheryl loved her family and would do anything for them. However, this often meant doing things Sheryl knew would be for the best, but because it would make a family member happy she would do it. For example, Richards book. Sheryl feared conflict in stating is wasn’t going to work out, but went along with it. Had Sheryl said something, then perhaps a different result could have come of the book deal. Additionally, she knew Olive wouldn’t win the beauty pageant and ran the risk of being devastated, but once again instead of causing conflict by vocalizing this opinion she goes along with what will make her daughter
