In the beginning of this article, the author states that people have lost the meaning of being in solitude. He explains that technology has made it impossible to be alone because we have social media and website we can use anytime. The monks gain spirituality by meditating in a group with others for days. They are not alone and they still gain spirituality for their body and mind. There are many ways to have a stronger spiritual self then just being in a place that is quit and in solitude. The author’s words “We are each also separate, each solitary, each alone in our own room, each miraculously our unique selves and mysteriously enclosed in that selfhood” (104). We are not alone because we have ourselves. We may be alone in a room and be able to have a conversation with someone else in our mind, which seems to be there beside us. Just because you are by ourselves physically doesn’t mean we are alone
