The End Of A Human Life: Perry Smith And Richard Hickock

Decent Essays
The end of a human life, it is something that everyone fears. People would rather not think about the end of their own life and those of their loved ones around them. In 2015, 15,696 people were murdered in the United States. It is shocking to many to see how many people lost their lives in one year. Those that had done the killing are seen as monsters and despicable people. To take another human life is seen as the worst thing someone can do. Those who commit the crime should be punished. What that punishment is differs from person to person. However what should be the punishment for someone who took away four human lives. Perry Smith and Richard Hickock, these men did exactly that. The acts these men committed are seen as despicable and should

Jonah Goldberg is the editor of National Review Online and author of The Tyranny of Clichés: How Liberals Cheat in the War of Ideas. He takes the standpoint in favor of the death penalty and that those who oppose it, whatever the intention, cannot hold against the argument. A minor point of his would be that opponents tend to avoid cases where the audience would not sympathize with their argument. After reading his article “Why Death Penalty Opponents Can’t Win,” I agree with his opinion because it deters crime, there are cases where uncertainty is not an issue, and it is just to execute a criminal who deserves to be executed. It is difficult to defend politically the death penalty in a country where thirty-one out of fifty states favor it.…

I also agree that they trials were carried out too hastily and poorly conducted on the courts part. The men were all tired and found guilty by an extremely bias group that already tried to execute them without any real evidence other than the word of two women. On top of a sham of a trial being put on the defendants weren’t given a jury of their peers, time to accumulate evidence or access to council all violations of the…

When someone commits a crime there are many punishments they can receive. House arrest, fines, jail time are some of the most common. But one type of punishment is the most polarizing of them all, the death penalty. Whether the death penalty should be used is often a debated topic between the science of killing someone for their crimes, or the more religious beliefs that it is cruel and unusual to use the death penalty. When considering people who were sentenced to the death penalty like Gregg, Penry, and Baze.…

The morality of the death penalty has long been, and still is a controversial topic in the United States. People have been debating for centuries whether or not this form of punishment should exist. Those supporting it have claimed that the death penalty acts as a deterrent of future crimes. On the other hand, those against it have disproved this claim. Studies show that capital punishment should not be used in the United States, since it does not act as a deterrent, certain groups are more likely to be sentenced to death, and it does not offer closure for families.…

My position is against what Dudley and Stephens did to Parker. None of the men were willing to give up their lives because they felt Parker’s life was not as valuable since he was going to die anyway. They never consulted with him to see if he would be willing to make the sacrifice for the greater good of the rest. Even if Parker agreed, the act of the others would still not be justified. They should have waited to see if there would be a natural death so they would not need to take another person’s life.…

As John Morrison exclaimed,“It should be clear that the death penalty does just the opposite of promoting decency and respect for life... It can never be applied fairly.” Since the mid nineteenth century, inmates on death row have been murdered by a plethora of gruesome methods, such as venomous lethal injections, gas chambers, and electrocution. According to the Death Penalty Information Center, there have been 1,413 executions in the United States from 1976 to the present. Although the number of death penalty verdicts are decreasing, flaws in the American judicial system have caused an increase in the amount of punishing wrongfully accused suspects to the death penalty.…

Taking the life of another has been considered a heinous crime that is worthy of capital punishment; but should taking the life of a person who has taken the life of another be justified? Is the murderer’s life less important than that of the person whose life he took? The death penalty has been the highest form of punishment around the United States, execution of innocent men, its negative influence on our society and the offence it has against human rights are all concerns that make the capital punishment wrong. The first established death penalty laws date as far back ats the Eighteenth Century B.C. in the Code of King Hammurabi of Babylon, which codified the death penalty for 25 different crimes.…
