The only true mention by Dr. Waite of skill in the book says, “Effective leaders utilize good decision-making skills, articulate the needs of their organization effectively, and communicate clearly” (Waite, 7). The text gets much more in depth with skills like communication, giving examples of different styles and ways to communicate. Such as coaching vs. counseling, all the way to different kinds of responses people can give, like reflecting response or a probing response (Whetten, 244-260). Character, communication, focus, initiative, listening, self-discipline, and vision are just a few of the many leadership traits named in the book. One trait that seemed discussed a lot to the reader in both the book and the text was Charisma. According to The EMS Leadership Challenge: A Call to Action, Charisma is “about giving people hope and making them believe in themselves and a vision. It is about projecting hope and sharing oneself with others” (Waite, 17). As stated by Developing Management Skills, Charisma is “ (1) the ability to inspire followers with devotion and enthusiasm; (2) an attractive aura, great charm; (3) a divinely conferred power or talent” (Whetten, 289). Both books have similar definitions and general thoughts about charisma. However, once again the textbook goes much deeper into Charisma.
