Children who experience negative parenting are more likely to have a difficult time recognizing and understanding others emotions (Kujawa et al., 2014). Parents who are depressed are less likely to experience a series of different emotions (Kujawa et al., 2014). The children are more exposed to minimum use of emotions such as sadness instead of a wide range of emotions (Kujawa et al., 2014). An auditory and vision assessment amongst preschoolers whose parents diagnosed with depression was conducted to examine emotion recognition (Kujawa et al., 2014). Parent-child attachment, a child’s ability to recognize emotion and social emotional development during the early years of a child’s life is essential for the social-emotional development. After reviewing the literature, it is safe to say that care-giver depression does have an impact on the social-emotional development of a child.
