When You Are Watching God Poem Analysis

This prayerful tone shifts into an imploring melody, with the singer almost shouting his pleas to the goddess and to love. This chorus is said with such force because it is the part of the song wherein the main character finally expresses how much his religion, or his love, means. At the beginning, he shouts, “Take me to Church,” the metaphor for lovemaking, because he thinks that this form of worship is the only means to heal himself of the sickness. The next lines, “I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies/ I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife,” puts weight on what he would do for love. Like a dog, the main character will strip himself of dignity to the bidding of his master, love, and thinks so highly of the lover as to think she needs a shrine, even while the lover is doing him wrong by lying. In a secular point of view, confessions entail humility and honesty, and an acceptance that the confessor is below the higher being. “No Masters or Kings/When the ritual begins.” Although this line has little to do with anything secular, the “ritual” mentioned has plenty to do with going to Church, a ritual for many Christians. “There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin,” refers to the ritual when there are yet to be leaders, masters and kings. What is being hinted at here is the innocence of love and lovemaking, of the ritual, before any outside power has had the chance to pollute it and label it as a grave sin and something to be avoided.
