Mitford uses an informative tone while explaining the embalming process. She was quite aware that many people do not know the embalming process and that was the reason she used the tone. How she systematically explained the process makes me as a reader appreciate that there is actually embalming that takes place. She explains how the victim’s blood is drained from the body, the way another substance is injected into the body. She vividly explains the environment in which embalming process is done, the tools that are used, the way the embalmer should look like. All the above are explained vividly and systematically. Furthermore, Mitford also throws some sarcasm here and there. This is evident when she explains the things that are done on a dead body to appear like a very pleasant thing. I am shocked by the whole lot of work that happens to body before it is put into display (Mitford 304). The whole process looked very peaceful. Her sarcastic tone has an effect on me, she makes me believe that embalming is that simple process as she puts it.
