Each of us is well aware of the BPA controversy sweeping the nation. Recently the U.S. Food and Drug Administration took the unprecedented step of mandating elimination of BPA in children’s drinking cups and bottles. This comes on the heels of increased concerns about the negative health effects from exposure to BPA that include risk of certain types of cancer, risk of heart disease and the increased likelihood of diabetes. Fourteen other state legislatures have acted in the best interest of their citizens to enact BPA legislation and now is the time for our great state to act as well.

As Bastiat, the most conservative of significant economist implied, common force – the law – must be used and only used when there is a threat to life, liberty or property. I humbly argue that BPA in products that contact any ingredient intended for consumption is now a known threat to life and thus a law may be enacted. The law, however, should not ask for the total elimination of BPA, but instead only for its removal from any plastic article that is meant to contact food or beverages.
In conclusion, let me ask humbly, but assertively, for your support and vote to eliminate BPA from consumer products that come in contact with food or beverages. The time is right to act and with the help of our manufactures we can use the above strategy to enact a law that can work for everyone…through
