In Rifkin’s article he says that “They feel pain, suffer and experience stress, affection, excitement and even love-“, Rifkin gives an example of an elephant that…
The culturally relevant film I watched was “The Vanished Elephant” directed by Javier Fuentes-León. The film was released in 2014 and is a feature narrative. It is from the countries of Peru, Colombia, and Spain. The film was played in Spanish with English subtitles. This is one of the only films that I have watched where the cast is mostly all Latino, not white, unlike other movies that would be considered popular in today’s generation.…
Water for Elephants By; Chasity Laporte Water for Elephants was published in 2006, and was banned in Bedford, N.H. School District (2010) after a parent complained about the book's sexual content, violence but still an amazing story in my own opinion. This book is an epic love story between a man named Jacob Jankowski, woman named Marlena, and Marlena's husband August who is a cruel man, and a beautiful elephants named Rosie, but why would such a amazing book be banned? I ask the same question. The sexule content between Marlena, and Jacob is pretty wild. The first kiss between Marlena and Jacob is reminiscent of the scene when the two of them dance in front of Rosie.…
On Sunday November 26th, I attended the Dina Mitrani art gallery located in Wynwood. I looked around and took many pictures during my visit. Overall, it was filled with beautiful artworks and it was a very positive experience for me. It was exactly what I expected it to be. During my visit, I came across an artwork that completely blew me away.…
The author compares Elephant Man and Justin because when Jack came out of the store they starting following him. Just like in the clip the after the Elephant Man walked out everyone followed him. In the text it states that “and they ran away , high fiving each other and laughing.” Also in the clip Elephant Man ran underground to the train station just like how Justin used to take the train station when he was little. The first sentence of part five Justin says “ The first time i seen Olivia’s brother, i have to admit i’m totally taken by surprise.”…
Water for Elephants goes along two story lines, both featuring Jacob, who is the main character. The story follows him in his old life, and back to his young life as he meets new friends, his wife, and lives life in the circus. Throughout the book, the story switches back and forth between old and young Jacob, and eventually ideas start to connect and we see how little Jacob progressed into old and experienced Jacob. In the majority of Water for Elephants, Jacob is young and innocent, just going through life and trying to get by day by day. He is currently attending Cornell, to get his Veterinary degree.…
For my museum paper assignment, I went to the Los Angeles County Museum to find an art piece. In the museum, I found an interesting art piece made by Hans Siebert von-Heister. The art piece is called “Anger”, it was made in Germany, 1920. Its oil on canvas and the scale is Frame: 31 x 26 x 1 ½, 24 ½ x 19in. This art piece uses some of formal elements and design principles to make the art very interesting to examine.…
Zainab Jafri Mr. Ballinger ENG-101-ML 27 October, 2016 Technologically Dependent Society Michael Moss’s The Extraordinary Science of Junk Food, An Elephant Crackup? by Charles Siebert, and Cathy Davidson’s Project Classroom Makeover all report that as society is progressing in a more innovative direction, we are using technology and advanced research to better our way of living. The Millennial generation is slowly becoming aware of how toxic processed foods truly are, therefore advancement in technology and medicine might make society healthier. As we are applying research to understand the congruence between animals and humans, the future might provide a collaborative environment where humans and animals will learn how to positively live…
Binge-drinking elephants, drunk on local hooch, have killed three people and destroyed 60 homes in a four day-rampage in eastern Asia. Yesterday they were reported by local officials to be sleeping off hangovers as shocked communities tried to clear he wreckage left by 3000-strong herd in remote villages on borders of the state Orissa and West…
They are too small beyond recognition, so viewers can just make out a figure. Some artworks that impressionists in the 19th century created share some commonalities with this painting. Impressionists depicted the nature with phenomenology excluding political, social, historical thought. They just focused on nature itself, so people are usually cropped or are represented by blurry silhouettes. The big difference from impressionism and the distinct feature of this painting is that what the artist wants to deliver is small philosophy, which is harmony between humanity and nature.…
Altruism in Elephants: Empathy and Higher Cognitive Ability It is generally thought that altruism is a behavior only displayed by simplistic creatures, such as ants or honeybees, which do not possess the cognitive ability to evaluate short or long-term reciprocal benefits. Very few mammal species have been observed to display truly altruistic behaviors. Dolphins and elephants, as well as the great apes, are examples of the few mammalian species which commonly display altruistic behavior, including consolation and targeted helping (De Waal 2007). What has initially appeared to be altruistic behavior in some non-human animals has been found to be more of an insurance policy towards future reciprocal behavior.…
Elephants have similar human emotions and experiences as us, especially when considering their great mental capacity. “When an elephant dies, its family members engage in intense mourning and burial rituals, conducting weeklong vigils over the body” (Siebert 355). Through these actions and rituals, it becomes clear that elephants have the ability to love, care, and grieve for one another. This is extremely similar to how humans perform last rites for one another at their time of death to show their emotions towards another member of their species and society. “Young elephants are raised within an extended, multitiered network of doting female caregivers” (Siebert 355).…
In the story, “Shooting an Elephant” by George Orwell, he is essentially powerless because even though he is an authority figure he feels he must do what the Burmese people expect him to do or he will be laughed at or humiliated. Orwell ends up shooting and killing an elephant, “a tame one which had gone must”(Orwell, p.140), which is aggressive behavior triggered by mating instincts(footnotes). He did not want to kill the elephant but he ended up doing it anyways because he felt pressured by all the 2000 plus Burmese people who expected him to do it. Even though he was in a position of power over the Burmese people he felt powerless and ended up doing what the Burmese people wanted in order not to be laughed at or spit on or seem like someone who was not in charge. In Shooting an Elephant, Orwell’s behavior demonstrates that imperialism as a political and social ideology doesn’t work because even though he is technically the one in authority he actually has no authority at all because he does things only so he doesn’t end up looking like a fool.…
Redefining “Normal” We are not as unique as we think we think we are. Instead we are a copy consisting of pieces of all that is around us. Anything we believe that we are is only a reflection of those who have influenced us. This is because we, humans, are wired to share ideas and seek for similarities with with the people that surround us, which then ends up producing a single idea of what normal is. Charles Siebert discusses the change of accepted normal human behavior towards elephants in his “An Elephant Crackup”.…
Several villagers went and touched the animal. They all formed their different views based on the part of the animal that they touched. At the end of the day, there were six different views of what the elephant was; a fan a smooth staff, rope, a water pipe and a hairy pillar. An elephant is a very big animal, and it is very…
