The Elements Paying Tribute to Friendship is a sculpture created by Louis-Simon Boizot in the year 1783. The sculpture is made out of “marble presenting the depth of carving by producing space and sense of physical presence” (Boizot). Cybele is the representation of “earth, are leaning over two lions that are both kneeling in front of Friendship” (Boizot). Triton and Nereid are both “emerging from the ocean and they both represent the element of water” (Boizot). Zephyr is the “elemental wind that is trying to reach out in the direction of Jupiter who has an appearance of an eagle that is holding a lightning bolt which symbolizes fire” (Boizot). “Cybele along with the lions and Nereid seem to be offering some valuables from the sea” (Boizot). Deresiewicz added strong diction directed to his audience, used his own personal examples, and made a claim that didn’t directly relate to his audience. Because Faux Friendship was originally written for The Chronicles of Higher Education, he uses terms better suited for educated people. He compares professional-networking, “cleaning the jungle gym of professional contacts in order to advance your career,” to social-networking.…

In most of these cases they turned on each other. In one situation especially, the main character Tom gets into a small fight with Wyatt, and calls her a name. Antonio comes to find a group of varying friends throughout Rudolfo Anaya’s Bless Me, Ultima. Antonio’s friends are near his age, though communally rash, are remotely diverse. While watching a group of children, Antonio learns about the individuals, mentioning that he “knew Ernie like[s] to brag” and Bones is “crazier than Horse” (35). Horse himself is believed to be a fighter, that he would “rear up and paw and stomp” at Antonio after he is flipped onto his back, instead letting out a “wild, shocking cry,” proving his simulation of strength tends to be a facade (38). Red, though not seen a lot is introduced when Antonio first enters school and cannot find where he needs to go.…

The quote from the passage I will be responding to is “The steady companionship of two or three kindred spirits can help us find the courage we need to speak and act as citizens.” and “It is equally true that we spend most of our lives in "tribes" or lifestyle enclaves—and that thinking of the world in terms of "us" and "them" is one of the many limitations of the human mind.” When I read both of these quotes I can’t help but think that they contradict each other. They both share the same idea of separating into “tribes” but they both mean different things. The first quote says getting into communities where you have the same opinions and views on the world is good.…

The Interlopers & Two Friends “‘What peace there would be among the forester folk if we ended our feud tonight. And if we chose to make peace among our people, there is none to interfere, no interlopers from outside’”(Saki 12). As two enemies begin to look more like two friends, the realization that the upbringing of children substantially affects the feelings, personality, and characteristics of that individual are, generally, shown to be based on their parents. However, these traits of Ulrich von Gradwitz and Georg Znaeym in “The Interlopers” by Saki and that of Monsieur Morissot and Monsieur Sauvage in “Two Friends” by Guy de Maupassant explains that despite both pairs of men having similar attributes such as stubbornness, their initial…

Similar to Hannah and Eva, Sula treated men as if they were only sexual objects not capable of love. The novel states, “Eva’s arrogance and Hannah’s self-indulgence merged in her and, with a twist that was all her own imaginations, she lived out her days exploring her own thoughts and emotions, giving them full reign, feeling no obligation to please anybody unless their pleasure pleased her” (118). Like her mother and grandmother, she rarely had a desire to love or be loved by a man instead her experiences with men were usually strictly to receive pleasure from sexual intimacy. It seemed that the women of the Peace family avoided romantic love and their lack of experience may have caused them to become more willing to disrupt the love of married couples. Overall the Peace family was dysfunctional and because it was all Sula knew she adopted their way of life into her own adulthood, instead of breaking the cycle as Helene did.…
