Purchasing Unhealthy Food

Health care professionals are alerted by the increasing pace of health related problems facing individuals with low-income; particularly among women. For women with low income, purchasing healthy food has been an issue, as most women are forced to go for quantity over quality. Due to the situations, women with low income find themselves, purchasing unhealthy food is associated with weight gain and in some cases of obesity, heart attack, as well as diabetes, has been reported to be associated with low income. To deliver a concrete understanding of how low income affects the food selections prepared by women, the author of this theme will be critiquing a research conducted by Wiig & Smith, (2008) titled; the art of grocery shopping on a food …show more content…
Conducting more calculation on the survey, the researchers organized food items frequency and the mean data using the Excel 2003 software. Distinguishing the participants into different groups, their heights and weights were evaluated using standard protocol use to calculate the Body Mass Index (BMI) (kg/m2). For underweight (BMI < 18.5kg/m2), normal weight (BMI = 18.5 – 24.9kg/m2), overweight (BMI = 25.0 – 29.9kg/m2) or obese (BMI ≥ 30.0kg/m2), (Wiig & Smith, 2008, p. 1727). Of the 92 adult females who took part in the study, the average age of the women was 37 years, with 51% of the participants African-American, 27% Native American and 13% Caucasian (Wiig & Smith, 2008, p. 1727). Most of the participants, received food stamps, some unemployed, while others caused an annual income that was less than $US 10 000 and 50% completed their college training. Away from the 92 participants, 76% were either overweight or obese at the time when the survey was carried. Women who lived in homeless shelters at the time of the study placed great emphasis on the type of food they purchased which differed from purchases made my women who lived in their own homes, which was mainly because of food storage issues encountered in homeless shelters (Wiig & Smith, 2009,). This is a strong point and information that the writer of this paper can easily relate to base on personal experience as a health care professional. Homeless shelters can become a place that dehumanizes people, as more individuals who find themselves in such places have literally neglected their health as they get involved in unhealthy eating habits, based on their living conditions while living in homeless shelters.
