What I Learned In My Classroom: A Tightful Learning Experience

Thus far in the elementary education program at Shepherd University has been a delightful learning experience. I’ve had several encounters with a variety of different teachers all of which have given me the opportunity to observe and/or engage in their classroom. Each classroom has given me the chance to see different strategies, classroom management and organization skills, as well as the incorporation of technology. It seems at first as if the days merge together, mostly being the same as the last. However, when I reflect back every day in every classroom I’ve been in has offered something new. I’ve recently finished my first semester of pedagogy and it provided me with so much greater understanding. Each and every learning experience thus …show more content…
I walked into pedagogy with so much frustration with the amount of reading from previous courses and definitely not looking forward to the amount of reading I was about do. However, reflecting back I can now see the importance of all the previous and present courses’ readings. In addition to that I will say no amount studying or reading can provide me with the knowledge I’ve learned in field. I’ve read many strategies on what can and should be used in a classroom but one thing the reading doesn’t cover is how effective or useful a strategy is in your classroom. One strategy that I’ve seen used the most is the use of learning stations. I personally think learning stations are very useful. However, I don’t feel they should be the primary strategy for teaching a new skill. While observing and participating in my facilitating teacher’s classroom I’ve had the opportunity to use some technology. I personally never seen the effectiveness of using the ELMO, however, I’ve learned how important and effective it can be just to display the work the students are supposed to do so that all students can see and follow along as the teacher explains. One particular concept that I’ve seen so impressively displayed in my facilitating teacher’s classroom is organization and planning. Throughout the semester there were many days where my facilitating teacher faced difficulties with teaching lessons due to scheduling of events …show more content…
This class has changed the outlook I have on learning. As I mentioned I became so frustrated with the amount of reading and assignments that were laid in my lap as class began. I began to wonder if I was even going to make it through the semester. At some point I began to wonder is this ever going to end, am I ever actually going to use this reading to help me in my classroom. I later found out that the answer to that is yes. However, reflecting back I am now appreciative on the knowledge I’ve learned. A misconception that I use to have that once you’re finished college you’re done with studying and learning. This is not true. As a teacher you must view every day as an opportunity to make improvement. You must assess yourself, on the implementation of the lessons you taught, and the students’ response of the lesson then from here see what can be improved. Teaching is a constant learning process on what can be done to make the classroom a more effective learning environment whether it be the use of a new practice, the use of a certain strategy, or providing more collaboration and engagement. Every year will bring a new batch of students with different needs from the previous year, as teacher you must be able to assess these new students and their needs. With different needs every year it is the teacher’s responsibility to discover what strategies will work best, and as the years progress new advancements and changes will

Like so many, I felt an undeniable call to action after watching Davis Guggenheim’s film Waiting for Superman. The film poignantly illustrates the imperative need for a long overdue paradigm shift in American education. In the film, activist, educator and founder of the Harlem Children’s Zone, Geoffrey Canada, shares the disillusionment he felt as a child upon realizing that Superman was not coming to save him from the perils of his impoverished South Bronx neighborhood. His message in the film is that we must become our own superheroes.…

Thus far, this class has not been at all what I anticipated when I signed up for it. It has been extremely eye opening. Prior to this class I knew there were injustices that women faced, but I was not aware of how extensive they were. Week after week, I am astonished to learn the various issues that women all around the world live with every day.…

Throughout my observation time spent at Reese Elementary, I have had the opportunity to observe two teachers, Mrs. Church, who is a second-grade teacher, and Mr. Dohrmann, who is a fifth-grade teacher. The teachers teach different grade levels and have very different teaching styles which lead to differences in classroom management and assessment, as well as, other categories. Even though there are many differences between Mrs. Church and Mr. Dohrmann they also have many similarities, such as the way they handle discipline and motivation. During my observation hours in both classrooms, I noticed the classroom management procedures that both teachers use. Both teachers have a class schedule they go by to keep the students and themselves on task throughout the day.…

I am currently student teaching in a 4th grade classroom at Sunset Elementary under my master teach, Alissa Nakaji. Upon my first day, I instantly fell in love with the dynamics of the classroom. The classroom had colorful posters explaining rules, consequences, inspirational quotes, and a list of roles for each student (changed weekly). This classroom feels more like a community of students striving together to have an optimal learning experience instead of just one teacher demanding and controlling the students. It is very autonomous and the teacher is involved only when needed.…

They have put upon me the importance of education in not only today’s society, but for the years to come. Researching this career made me even more excited to do something this special with my life. I did my observation in Mrs. Cameron’s kindergarten class at Valley View Elementary School. I went over spring break, so I stayed for three days in the classroom and got to experience what it is like throughout the whole day. Mrs. Cameron’s classroom had five tables for the students to sit and a rocking chair at the front for herself; although, she hardly ever sat. Mrs. Cameron did not have a teacher’s desk, but instead she had a chair at one of the tables with the students. There were posters on the wall that together made the alphabet, and others which displayed vocabulary words.…

When I first signed up for the fall semester course English 101, I did not think much of it at first. I Simply thought it would be another writing course with boring prompts and no challenge similar to high school, but I was wrong. In this semester alone I learned more about writing mechanics, structure, heading, organizing and sourcing than I had previously in my high school career. This being said I was not prepared for this course and did not earn the grades I wanted, but I learned from all my mistakes as I wrote each paper it became slightly better. I feel that high school does not do an adequate job at preparing you for the difficulty and challenge that is created in this environment.…

Reflecting back to my educational experience from elementary to high school, I cannot recall a single moment where I felt I had agency over my opinions or my overall education experience. I grew up in a community that places respect over anything. I was taught one simple phrase: don’t speak unless spoken to. This main value was taught at home and eventually made its way into the school curriculum. Students were taught to obediently listen to the teachers and were encouraged to ask less questions.…

Before I could even comprehend the letters in front of me, my parents instilled in me a love for reading. And, thanks to their patience and diligence, reading and writing have always been my strongest and most beloved subjects. At the age of eight I had read the Harry Potter series multiple times and could recite my favorite passages on demand. By the age of ten I had read most of the books in my local library and by eleven I had begun to read the classics such as Pride and Prejudice. By fourteen I had begun biographies and by 16 I had a book self as diverse as the authors featured on it.…

My goal is to create a plan to teach and organize a classroom equipped to create a fun, safe, and motivational learning environment for pre-k students. My first thought is how one grasps the minds of this young age group of students through classroom management. The room has to be age appropriate, very attractive and inviting to the students. “Classroom management is a set of procedures and systems that are put in place to create an environment that focuses on students learning”. In order for classroom management to work, educators need to know the reasoning for classroom management.…

Ideally the modern American school would construct the foundation for children’s futures. School currently outfits them with the basic thinking skills and general knowledge necessary later in life from an early age; however by and large, U.S. schools are falling short of this admirable goal. With current coursework trends favoring quantity over quality, “When am I ever going to need to know this,” has become a common remark in classrooms nationwide. This misplaced emphasis on bigger workloads creates an environment in which coursework is morphed from a valuable means of learning into dreaded busywork. At its worst it’s been known to lead to neglect of coursework, failed classes, and even failure to graduate.…
