We all know the famous tale of Cinderella, but what many of us don’t know is that there are more than just one story, as a matter of fact there are hundreds of cinderella stories from all around the world. Today I am going to compare the world famous Disney story to the not so popular Rhodopis the egyptian cinderella.
In the famous Disney story, the main character Cinderella was a orphan due to her mother dying and her father moving away leaving poor Cinderella with a evil step-mother to “take care” of her. As she grew older she became a beautiful young lady, jealous of her beauty the step-mother would always give her the chores no matter how difficult the task was. One day the king is hosting a ball for the prince’s return to the castle, but

The man who bought her was a kind old man, but he spent most of his time sleeping and never saw how much Rhodopis suffered at the hands of his other servants. Rhodopis one day sung and danced on the riverside waking the old man, he hears her and decides that she should have shoes so he orders a pair of golden sandals. The Pharaoh decides to hold a court and everyone is invited, but poor Rhodopis had to finish many chores and could not get them done. While she is washing clothes a falcon swoops down and steals one of her golden slippers she is upsetted by it but continues doing her chores. The falcon drops the slipper on the prince’s lap, the Pharaoh demands to find whoever the owner of the sandal is. Eventually they arrive at the slave plantation Rhodopis tries on the slipper and it fits she is taken to the prince where she gets married.
Now that we know about each story I am going to find the similarities and differences. Both women are mistreated by someone they live with, in both stories Royalty throws a party of some sort they both get help from a higher power allowing the story to proceed. Both rulers send soldiers to find whoever can fit into a piece of footwear, and both women are found and are the married to royalty. Now for the differences, Cinderella is not a slave but a servant/maid to a Step-mother, while Rhodopis is mistreated by slaves. Instead of a godmother, Rhodopis

Another example of the stepmother’s cruelty is revealed in the text when godmother describes Cendrillon’s life, “nothing was easy for her at home. Madame and spoiled Vitaline ate dainties.…
