According to Beck (n.d.), “cognitive behavior therapy is based on the cognitive model: the way we perceive situations influences how we feel emotionally” (para. 2). People tend to view stressful situations differently than one another. Moreover, what one person defines as a stressful event, another may not experience any stress at all. CBT provides tools for an individual to learn how to interpret a stressful situation, such as work-related stress, to see it for what it is not exaggerated with faulty distorted thinking. One way CBT is different from other therapies is, results are achieved in a short period of time, such as only 16 sessions, as with psychoanalysis can take years. This kind of rapid therapy can be convenient for a person that leaves a busy lifestyle, such as people in the workforce. For example, the client must be completely honest with a therapist and be willing to share their feelings, thoughts and experiences get the most out of therapy (Mayo Clinic, 2013). Without any kind of willingness to change, it is highly unlikely CBT will work for an individual. Another necessary requirement for a person receiving CBT, is they have to be open-minded to doing things differently. So as we can see, the responsibility does not completely lye on the counselor administering the therapy, but also it is up to the client to do what is necessary for this kind of treatment to be successful. For less serious cases of stress an individual may want to explore self-help methods and techniques. Self-help can be an alternative to talk therapy. For example, daily meditation can be a great way for a person to eliminate stress. There are a wide variety of techniques that are used in meditation. The primary goal of meditation is for an individual to focus their attention an on a more calming awareness. Meditation has be practiced in Eastern countries for thousands of years, and has been known to benefit a person’s health. Countries in the West are also catching on how meditation can improve an individual’s health and is starting to become popular.
