In Kenya, one of their top priorities is involving the public and developing trust between the police and public that is usually lacking in developing countries (“Implementing” 9). With the public being involved, this helps build community and police relations and prevents police corruption. If citizens are aware of the problem of wildlife trafficking and are given a way to prevent it while having a steady source of income, there is a less likelihood of wildlife trafficking being a local crime and citizens are better equipped to realize when poachers and foreigners come to an area and are up to no good. This is only one of many reasons why infrastructure is so important and why citizens need to be able to provide for their families before they try to change their society. With the demand of exotic animals and the wildlife trade rapidly rising exponentially, this problem can no longer be hidden. Consequences such as wildlife populations’ decreases creating inhospitable environments that affect human operations, cause practically irreversible changes that people are noticing and are willing to do something about it. Criminalization is a solution that helps governments and the public be involved in saving animal’s lives while connecting law enforcement with the community.
