Water is one of the most essential elements to health and survival on earth for all living things. Due to the fact that water has been relatively abundant throughout our existence on earth, we have come to take it for granted. The problem we are facing today is that even if there is enough water, it is not water that is good enough to meet human needs causing fresh and clean water to quickly become a majorly less abundant resource. We are withdrawing freshwater from surface water sources and groundwater aquifers at rates faster than we can replenish or renew them and now much of the world 's fresh water is being degraded. There are multiple ways of assessing and approaching the increasing need for water conservation. Overall the main goal is to supply and sustain this essential need and demand for both current and future generations.
On a personal scale, water is essential to humans in that it makes up more than two thirds of human body weight. Just like all living organisms, the human body has water insufficiency mechanisms that help to prevent dehydration to ensure survival. A mere 2% drop in our body 's water supply can trigger signs of dehydration causing illness (Boyer 43).Water is also essential to the environment in many different ways. Plants and animals depend on water, just like people. During periods of water scarcity their food supply can shrink and their habitat can be damaged.
