The Effects of War and Peace on Foreign Aid
Foreign aid plays a major role in the sustainability of economic and social activities of developing nations. Whether in the form of development or humanitarian aid, the foreign aid is key to ensuring better living conditions and economic development for these states. These forms of aid are influential in pushing for progress in among the developing nations, but the presence of war greatly affects progress. Most of the wars present developing nations are politically instigated, which implies that peace in developing states is synonymous with political stability as is the case with almost every African state (Besley & Persson, 2011). Granted this connection, peace is beneficial for the distribution of foreign aid because the consequent presence of a stable government ensures effective assessment of the foreign aid until it reaches the desired destination. Foreign aid is awarded to developing nations in various forms such as capital, services, firearms, basic commodities and other goods. This makes their assessment quite difficult due to their varied forms. Another significant factor that makes peace such a key factor in the distribution of foreign aid is the fact that the social institutions of developing nations are significantly underdeveloped and complex in nature. This makes it a necessity to involve local bodies such as the countries’ government in the distribution process for increased efficiency.
