The material in videogames deadens adolescents to the consequences of violence in reality. Yet, it cannot be claimed that videogames are a direct cause of their violence. There have been numerous accounts of school shootings where the killer was said to have been influenced by videogames. However, it was never proven. This is apparent in the infamous Columbine High School shooting. According to history.com’s television network, there was never any confirmation that the two students responsible for the deaths of twelve students and one teacher committed their inhumane acts through the influence of video games. When this shooting occurred, it was during a time period of decreasing violence. “Sales of video games have more than quadrupled from 1995-2008, while the arrest rate for juvenile murders fell 71.9% and the arrest rate for all juvenile violent crimes declined 49.3% in this same period” (Video Games 1).
