“The Effect of Videogames on Student Achievement” by Jonathan Craton. He brings up numerous interesting topics within his article. Craton discusses periodically throughout the article about how playing videogames is “bad” for students, both male and female and also how it can affect one’s behavior. Though Craton’s response about “The Effect of Videogames on Student Achievement” emphasizes women playing videogames, how women are portrayed and the psychological effects, he does not thoroughly analyze the psychological effects on women enough in this article.
Craton’s research reveals that fewer college females game than males do. Craton pronounces that “less than 1 and every 50 incoming females to 1 and 10 males” admit to playing videogames for more than 10 hours per week. So while roughly 2% of women play videogames, 10% of men play. With the statistics shown it seems like gaming is aimed more towards men and not women. Seeming like it is a gender biased, whereas gaming should be an asexual hobby for everyone. There shouldn’t have to be games just intended towards women or men. It would be more profitable for the companies to include both genders as characters. While the ratio for playing videogames, whether it be PC, PlayStation, or Xbox the ratio is almost 50:50 in the United States.
