Parents, like their children, can also be interested in playing videogames. Videogames have evolved from being too violent and causing children to become couch potatoes to a source for parent and child bonding. Such a positive change can be attributed to the growing pervasiveness of technology throughout society. Four situations support the claim videogames can establish a positive relationship between the parents and their children. First, parents can encourage their children to persevere after a failure and continue to work toward a goal. Second, parents can recognize and take advantage of this chance to help children increase their critical thinking skills. Third, parents can support their children’s future careers. However, parents still take their roles seriously as parents, rather than as friends, when their child plays videogames. Also, parents and their children feel upset when playing with people who are inexperienced with technology. Even though videogames can have a positive impact on the parent-child relationship, make parents responsible for their child’s use of technology, and cause parents and their children to feel the unease of playing with people who are naïve in technology, I believe that both the parents and their children can benefit from playing videogames. Parents would understand how technology has changed from the 20th century to the 21st century and understand how learning is always taking place no matter what age a person is. On the other hand, children would understand that learning how to use technology at a young age would help them to succeed in applying for jobs in the future. In other words, children would understand how getting a job is not just about teamwork or creating interpersonal relationships, but also about how a person can work in an environment with technology constantly changing around us.
