An article that was published in the “Journal of Sleep Research”, stated that “When participants were exposed to 2.5 hours of video-game play prior to bed, subsequent objective sleep was shorter, by twenty-seven minutes, and less efficient compared to when they only played the video-game for 50 minutes.” The report done by D.L. King shoes that the reduction in sleep may have implications for daytime functioning and possible academic performance. Which over time can lead to failing grades and in some situations could cause people to lose their jobs if they are showing up late, due to oversleeping, etc. So, after explaining and viewing the negative effects, why would an adolescent allow themselves to be so consumed with a video game to the point of addiction? The question and answers seem silly and one may be quick to offer their assumptions but in reality it is much more difficult to answer. Adolescents who have higher level of anxiety, aggressive behavior and neuroticism are at higher risk for video gaming addiction. Adolescents who are addicted to video games have lower academic grades than their non-addicted peers. Males are more prone to a video game addiction than females because boys tend to enjoy more violent or aggressive games than girls. Adolescent who have parents who display an authoritarian parenting style are more likely to be addicted to video games because they view video gaming as an escape from the strict and demanding parenting style. Lastly, the DSM-5(Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-5 edition), listed gaming addiction as a “Condition for Further Study” in 2013. They are currently fighting to have “video gaming addiction” to be added as a behavioral addiction so that individuals will be able to see an a clinical psychologist for
