Effects of Video Game Characteristics on Aggression
The second study we will examine was the most effective of those used in this review at determining the true effect of video games on aggression. The study, conducted by Paul Adachi and Teena Willoughby, compared the effect of video game violence on aggression to the effect of video game competitiveness on aggression (4). They proposed that there are actually four main characteristics in video games (violence, competitiveness, difficulty, and pace of action) that may affect aggression, and with their study, they hoped to address three major deficiencies they saw in the existing literature at the time: first, no study compared the effects of violent and nonviolent video games when the games were matched on competitiveness, difficulty, and pace of action; second, measures of aggression used in previous studies could also have measured competitiveness, creating questions about whether the violent video games are related to aggression or competitiveness; and third, the effect of video game competition has not been thoroughly examined in relation to aggression (4).
To address these gaps in the literature, they did two studies, one to isolate and measure the effect of video game violence on aggression and one to isolate and measure the impact of video game competition on aggression. The first…
