Social Consequences Of Video Game Addiction

Due to the fact that video game addiction has many of the same similarities with other addictions such as preoccupation, withdrawal symptoms, compulsions, and escapism, gamers can easily become fully immersed in the video game world. One study conducted by Jason C. Northrup at St.Mary’s University in Texas, examined the effects of gaming on married couples. Through interviews, surveys, and questionnaires, Northrup was able to analyze the negative social effects of gaming on marital relationships. His findings stressed that the spouses of gamers suffer immensely, feeling anger, resentment, rejection, fear, and loneliness on a consistent basis. What commonly occurs when engaged in one of these martial relationships in which only one member of the relationship plays video games is that distance forms between the couple. If it is comparable to other addictions such as gambling or alcohol use, it is fair to say that the industry of gaming should be regulated at a higher degree in order to ensure that fewer people are placed into a situation of addiction. In recent years, some gaming companies have begun playing warnings within their games in an effort to curb addiction. One online game called World of Warcraft has begun placing messages such as “Take Everything in Moderation," and “Bring your friends to Azeroth, but don’t forget to go outside of Azeroth with them as well.” (Van Rooij, 2010, p.489) These messages are in response to the multitude of studies that have been conducted in regard to video game addiction and it’s adverse effects on a gamer’s health and well-being. Other video game companies need to take this addiction more seriously, as if it gets out of control, they run the risk of having the government ultimately
