With 72% of homes having video games (Addictions.com/video-games), it is not surprising that video game addiction runs rampant throughout children and even some adults. From wanting to play it as much as possible to playing it all the time, there is no easy way around it. Though it is not like a drug addiction, it can have major health, financial, and general life risks. This is why prevention should be important; if it is not stopped now, it will only get worse when more games are created in the future. Video game addiction should always be taken seriously considering the mental, physical, and financial risks. On average, the length of time spent playing video games was around 20 hours a week. If it is not stopped soon enough, it can leave problems that are almost impossible to deal with. Setting limits, taking and hiding the consoles, making the child earn them, talking to the child about it, or even giving the games and consoles away are all ways that can limit and end video game addiction. If it is not taken care of soon enough, the person can suffer from not only health risks, but social and financial risks. If someone is constantly wanting to go home and play games, they will have no social skills. This can cause them to be antisocial, and eventually get antisocial personality disorder. Without the ability to survive in a sociable environment, it can affect their relationships and even their chances of getting a job. It is typically really easy for someone to notice if another person has a sociable problem due to their anxious actions. On the financial side of the addiction, billions of dollars are spent every year on video games, only making the addiction worse. They were pixelated, slow and not as enjoyable. Year by year, video games slowly became smarter and faster. From old, pixelated games to the new high-definition ones, people have always loved them and found a way to become addicted to them. “Videogames are emerging from their period of infancy and maturing to be one of the most all-encompassing and inspiring entertainment mediums of our time, becoming an increasingly central component of modern culture” (futureconscience.com). Considering what people can buy now, the future for video games is limitless. Everything from the Xbox One to the PlayStation 4 will eventually get replaced over time, and people always want the new games and systems whether it be something new or an upgrade. With the games becoming more technologically advanced, the cycle of buying a new game system will always be present. The “cooler” and newer the game, the more people will want it.
