Unnatural Genetic Mutation Genetic engineering in agriculture has become a problem throughout the United States and many people remain unaware of the risks involved with genetically modified food. So, what exactly is genetically modified food and why is it so harmful? Genetically modified foods, also referred to as GMOs, are the unnatural manipulation of an organism’s DNA in order to produce mutated offspring. People in today’s society are not aware of the potentially harmful side effects because the United States government approved GMOs based on studies conducted by the same corporations that created them and also profit from the sales of these products. These crops were introduced into the world in the year 1994 and “ever since the …show more content…
Although scientists had the best intentions, they failed to provide the growing population with a safe alternative to natural foods. The developers of GMOs referred to their work as a “period in human history filled with the promise and hope, an opportunity perhaps for the first time to feed the billions of hungry men, women and children already the world” (Newton). Researches provided an astounding number of individuals with the hope of bettering the world that surrounds them but soon crushed their spirits when the risks involved overpowered the benefits. Starving countries may be in desperate need for food but altering crops reduce the quality tremendously and effect human …show more content…
Studies conducted showed that the amount of crop yield did not increase so therefore, the performance of genetically modified foods did not meet the world’s standards. Academic studies of “corn and soybeans, the two primary genetically engineered food and feed crops grown in the United States and Based on those studies, the UCS report concludes that genetically engineering herbicide-tolerant soybeans and herbicide-tolerant corn has not increased yields” (Smith). An overwhelming amount of resources and money were wasted to create an altered seed that failed the world. The money wasted on the creation of GMOs could have been used to help feed starving children around the globe instead of unleashing an unsafe mutant into the world. Starvation around the world cannot be cured by a magic seed with exaggerated
