There are now a multitude of problems within Canadian prisons. In many locations throughout Canada, prisons are dealing with overcrowding, violence, insufficient rehabilitative programs, and many other problems for a large number of prison inmates (Latimer, 2015). In the legislation, officers are have more rights when dealing with inmates which could be deemed as unfair but it is also a huge problem for these already overflowing prisons. When inmates are released back into communities they now have worse mental as well as physical illnesses, along with more anger than when they had first entered prison. “As a result, increasing numbers are returning to prison for violent offences within five years of completing their sentences.” (Latimer, 2015) People are being thrown into prison for crimes that would normally be dealt with other sentencings. There are many negative impacts to being “tough on crime” within Canadian prisons. Many expenses are made to pay for the different methods approaching the unfair “tough on crime” policies. The measures taken to prevent crimes are costly and generally fails to work. “The annual average cost of keeping an inmate in a federal penitentiary is $109,699, while the average cost of maintaining an offender in the community is $29,476” (Zinger, 2012). There is a great amount of funding for trials, prosecution services, legal aids, probation, parole, and other expenses. Funding for more officers and allowing them to be “tough” is concerning because the legislation gives them far too much power when dealing with “challenging inmates”. (Goff, p. 02, 2014) Being “tough on crime” is not only an expensive problem but it is also quite unfair. The Conservative government deciding to be “tough on crime” is not effective. Many policies made to highlight strict punishment as the only response to crime activities is known as getting “tough on crime”. In connection to this, people want underage youth to be equally treated before the law the same way and adult would. Many others hope there would be a mandatory minimum sentence for offenders. Using this approach, despite how successful it may appear, it has flaws that receive criticism. Prisons are having problems within due to the sudden large population with inmates. It is expensive to be “tough on crime” and is unfair. Also having these policies in place has not stopped enough crimes for it to make sense. Conservative government claiming to get “tough on crime” is not as effective as it is deemed to be, if anything, it’s just another tactic to get more
