In May of 1865 the Civil War officially ended. This brought the country back together, though tensions were still high, and the bloodiest conflict America had faced ended. This would soon bring an end of slavery in 1868, but that only technically freed slaves. Indentured servitude and systemic discrimination still ran rampart. In 1870 the 15th amendment was ratified which banned racial discrimination in voting, but that was actually somewhat negative because people felt the need to take in upon themselves to stop black people from voting through intimidation and violent attacks. Then almost 3 decades later in 1896 the “Separate but Equal” act was passed stating that blacks and whites could be separated but still fundamentally equal.

Not even 2 full years after WW2 on 1947 a cold war between America and Russia started which most simply was a contest to see if communism or capitalism was better. Along with a competition of advancements of weaponry, there was a space race that was a race to see who could make it to space first. Russia won that race with Sputnik, a satellite that reached space in 1957. However, this only started the Moon race, which just like the Space Race, was a race to see who could make it to the moon first. Former President John F. Kennedy started this race in 1962 with his famous moon speech. Before the end of the decade on June 20th, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the surface of the moon. This was meant to keep the people in the communist Berlin in, and if any attempted to leave they were executed immediately. On the other side of the wall was a capitalist nation which the residents in the Soviet Union longed to be in. Finally, in 1991 the Cold War was brought to an end as the Berlin War was torn down bringing the “prisoners” of Berlin together with the rest of what is now Russia.
A decade of peace stretched from the end of the Cold War to August 11, 2001, when a terrorist group called Al Qaeda hijacked two 747 commercial planes and flew them directly into the World Trade Centers (Twin Towers), killing over 3000 people and starting the War on Terror on the same year. It took 9 years, but on May 2, 2011 was killed and Al Qaeda fell. This hasn’t put an end to the idea however, and other radical Islamic terror groups of rose up since then and we continue fighting them off.
