Technology: Good or Evil? In the current time a part of the society cannot imagine their life without technology. The constant time society spends checking their electronical devices. Like cell phones, computers, TV and video games. Teenagers and adolescents might feel more connected to this topic. The articles “Teens: This Is How Social Media Affects Your Brain” by Susie East. “It’s Digital Heroin: How Screens turns Kids into Psychotic Junkies” by Nicholas Kardars. And “The Impact of Social Media on Children, Adolescents and Families” by Gwenn Schurgin O’Keeffe, and Katheleen Clarke, all deliberates the phenomenon that is happening with social media, video games, and technology in general. It indicates how social media is a common activity for communicating and for entertainment among teenagers and children. Social media can also have its benefits like creation of blogs and podcasts as teaching tools. And the access to health information, to develop supportive networks. However parents play an important role in monitoring what their adolescents are posting, sharing and liking on their social media. With the help of pediatricians families are being able to understand and be aware of problems that Facebook, Twitter and Myspace can lead. Just as depression, sexting, cyberbullying, privacy issues and exposure to inappropriate content. According to “’the congress children’s online privacy protection act(COPPA) which prohibits web sites from collecting information on children under 13 years without parental permission”’ (o’ Keeffe). It is important that parents monitor if their children or adolescents are on a web site appropriate to their age. Since a common practice done by adolescents is to falsify their age. Some specific ways recommended to parents by pediatricians are, parents socializing with their children about online use. Parents participating more into technology, the supervision of online activities by communicating and participating with teenagers. The impact that technology has made in teenagers and children. The evidence of clinical tests that proves the effects caused by technology in the brain. Socializing through social media, liking pictures and posts even if the content is inappropriate. Sometimes peer influence can be involved. The long hours youth spends on social media and video games. The importance of parental awareness on what teenagers are exposed and experimenting on social media. My own experience with social media and technology in general, parallels to these articles. Taking advantage of the pros but, sometimes even do or take the disadvantages. I socialize, share, and check continuously Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat. Cannot deny the likes received contributes to cheering me up. However always having in mind not to lose control, and to use less technology, only if it’s necessary. At the end technology can be evil if someone achieves a malicious intention. And can be good when someone takes precaution and uses it responsibly to improve. And remember sometimes is good to disconnect from technology and reconnect with each
