Tyler voices his own concern by stating that he is losing sleep knowing that there are people out there ready to “pull the trigger” and end their lives. Due to his lack of sleep he could be dealing with emotional issues such as stress or depression. He says that he is not able to sleep in hopes to personalize the song and persuade the audience to think of all of the effects of suicide. Not only does the person who commits the act suffer, the families, friends, and people who care suffer as well. They spend countless hours grieving and wishing they could have done something to stop it from happening. When a suicide occurs everyone who knew the person wishes they could have done something to attempt to save them. This is always the case, and this is mainly the main reason why music about suicide is made; to try and prevent suicide. This being said, music can serve as a life line. From past experiences with someone I know, music served as their way out when they got depressed. It allows the listener to connect with someone on an emotional level and understand that they are not alone. The issue of suicide is extremely vast and prevalent in today’s society. It directly and indirectly affects people worldwide, and influences many forms of media, the biggest being music. Thousands of songs are influenced by suicides, and they are made as a relief for the singer and the listeners, to shine light on the issue in hopes to improve suicide prevention. “Guns for Hands” addresses suicide among its audience, personalizes the song, and offers a way out other than death.
